Default 1997 discovery auto won't move in drive

1997 Discovery automatic.
I have a very annoying intermittent problem which leaves me stranded sometimes.
Symptoms:
Won't move forward in drive, particularly when parked on a hill.
Won't idle smoothly when this happens.

Happens more when tank is low but not always.
On flat ground will eventually move when it is warmer, but randomly fails to move in Drive during a journey when I stop at a roundabout or point it toward a hill.
Yesterday it failed to move in Drive at a roundabout and wouldn't even click over. I clicked through the Park, Drive, N, 1,2 and 3 and then it started again and moved a short distance in Drive but then wouldn't move at all, but was running, so I left it where it was and walked to work.

Any clues??

Check your transmission fluid and report back. Is it low? Smell burnt? Brown?

Yes I have checked transmission and it is fine. I had a service about 2 weeks ago as well.
Someone was fiddling with the 4x4 gear stick recently.....could this have any bearing?

Your shift linkage needs adjusting.
Next time it wont move when you put it in drive move the gear shifter to 1st and see if it moves.
Let us know what happens.

Ok so Spike555 I did like you said. When I drove to work yesterday I was normal until I got outside work on a hill and it decided to not move forward, so I put it in 1st and it worked. This morning when I finished work it didn't want to move right from the start.....but it did in 1st.
So what do you reckon? Thanks for getting back to me.

Your shift linkage needs to be adjusted, when you think you are in drive you are actually half way between neutral and drive so the transmission is slipping when under load because it is not fully in gear.
Pop the trim piece off of the top of the gear shift ****, inside should be a nut, with the shifter in park tighten that nut.
Experiment with the tightness until the transmission acts and shifts the way you feel is normal.

Thanks Spike555. I will give that a try and let you know how I went. Thank you so much for your suggestions. I live in Tasmania and there isn't the knowledge base for Land Rovers here. So thank you for helping this grandmother!
