Cool 1999 Manual or 2001 Auto HELP!

I have been a lurker for a while on thei great site. I am getting ready to purchase a long awaited Disco. I am looking at 2 at the present time and asking for opinions for "the forum experts".

170,000kms manual 1996 $5000
or
250,000kms auto 2001 $4200

The 1996 has no issues that the owner has stated, it's on the island about 4 hours from my home. And the 2001 has the ABS lights on it's off the island requiring a ferry ride and 12 hours driving.

I don't know much of the history of either vehicle, but when I am near the crunch (waiting to sell my 2000 Grand Cherokee) I will be asking more questions about the vehicle then.

Well, I have found a 1998 Range Rover with 110,000kms on it for $4000.

The engine light is on, ABS light, and "transfer case in neutral" light on. The gut selling bought from original owner with the transfer case not working, he apparently disconnected and reconnected the battery and the trasfer case works fine now outside of the light staying on....

I just got off the phone with the owner and seemed to be enjoying the Saturday night with his buds, so he was a little incoherent at the time.

He is sending pics to me tomorrow. THere is rust spots over each rear wheel (I thought they were all aluminium???)

Here is the link to the Range ROver

PLease advise if I should drive 8 hours to look at or stay away

Rick
