Default 200 tdi disco cam belt replacement

i hope one one of you guys can help me.

i need to check/replace the cam belt on my newly acquired 200 tdi disco. trouble is im stuck in the canary islands with next to no tools and no workshop manual.

i can see that removing the fan could be troublesome. does anyone know if its a conventional or a reversed thread? also what size is the retaining nut and what is the easiest way of stopping the pulley rotating as try to remove the fan?

can anyone else think of anything else i might have trouble with whilst getting the timing belt cover off? will the cover require a new gasket? will i need any special tools in tackling the job.

thanks for reading this.

jim.

32mm "Viscous spanner" basically a standard spanner with an "offset", and it's a left hand thread and a very tight fit... there's no way you'll get a socket on it.

Yes the cover will need a new gasket - especially if you're a distance away from an easy source of parts, always fit a new gasket and always buy two (since they're cheap) when you order parts to fit - that way if you wreck one you've got a backup.

You're going to need a 32mm socket to remove the crank pulley and a 2 or 3 leg puller to get the pulley off the end of the crank. A comprehensive socket set and a couple of torque wrenches - one of which MUST be a bendy bar type, rather than a snap over type.

You'll need the locking tools or substitutes to lock the injection pump pulley and the flywheel to be able to time the injection pump properly - even as little as one tooth on the belt out and you're really going to notice a performance difference. You can fabricate substitutes for the cam and IP pulley locks using resonable quality drill bits (9.5mm for the IP pulley - the crank pulley is nigh on impossible to do without access to a bench mounted drill press and you'll need a spare bellhousing plug to fit a drill bit to)

Some good pics of what you'll find and a walk through here:

http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=3945

and another guide here:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f21/ho...-belt-831.html

I can't verify how good either guide is... I wouldn't attempt this without a workshop manual of some sort and, preferably, the genuine locking tools for the pump and crank.

Found this link for online tools:

http://shop.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Engine_tools.html

Both the viscous spanner (expensive!) and the locking pin (cheap) for the crank are on there.

Hope that helps,

Sure it's 200Tdi, Jim? 200Tdi has timing chain and is very reliable. 300Tdi has belt, and is a bit more problematic. LH thread on fan hub. A crack with a soft hammer on 32 mm thin spanner will release it. If it is 300Tdi, try www.difflock.com (I think) for specialist tools and a step by step cam belt replacement guide.

You ought to get a RAVE 1 disc or Workshop manual, too. Check outwww.aulro.com.au for some guidance here. A wealth of info on this site.

Sorry Pierre, but you're wrong about the 200Tdi... it's got a belt not a chain. It's the 19J Turbo Diesel engine that has a chain, very similar to the 12J N/A engine.
