2003 disco has me stumped - help !!!
Hello to all L.R. owners,
If I don't get this car going soon I will be moving out with it, says my wife.
Bought it last yr with multiple issues. Have not been able to get past few.
To be more specific P0306 & P0303. Simple right?
that's what I thought, yr later I'm still stuck.
Based on reading many posts here is what I have done:
1. replaced plugs
2.replaced wires
3.replaced coils
so far nothing has changed. I hope I diid't screw up when installing wires on the coil, it was pretty chalanging removing and reinstalling plenum for the first time.
I can't get my fat hands behind there, is there any way of knowing if maybe I CROSSED WIRES ? 6 & 3 ??? but that doesn't seem likely, does it? Anyway, to check without removing plennum again.?
Tommorow I'm going to back up and check compression on those 2 cyl
Looking for (130 + ) and if that ok then I guess CPU would be the only other logical item to check/ replace.
ANY ADVICE ???
PS. ALMOST FORGOT just got a new code to add to my problems:
P1884 TRANSMISSION TRANSFER CASE DISINGAGED SOLENOID
& SHORT TO GROUNd
Please help,
I have been fighting this think for a long time now and starting to feel pretty frustrated and stupid.
Mark

1. P1884 is one of those codes that shows one thing to a basic scanner and has many sub-codes that show up to a dealership level scanner (not at a auto parts store). Attached is page with tranny codes from RAVE shop manual. First thing is be sure you have a great condition battery verified by voltage readings while running and while not running with a modest load like head lights. Tranny ECU loves to whine about battery volts.
2. Any coolant loss? Overheating? White smoke out tail pipe? Plugs look steam cleaned? Head gasket or worse....
3. Replace CPU and you will invoke other issues with being synced to BCU, would replace them as a set from same donor vehicle.
4. See attached for plug wire layout.
5. When clearing the 300 codes, they may come back in two drive cycles. System likes to store them and see if they happen two days in a row.
6. SWMBO - jewelry usually works

Mark, how many miles on the engine, who's plugs and wires did you use?
I would do a compression test on all 8 cylinders and depending on the out come, might do a leak down test looking for a possible warn cam lobe as being the issue.

Well I had to work late today, so I couldn't mess with it at all.
My disco has aprox.124k. As soon as I get a chance I will pull all plugs as recommended and check compression on all cyl.
The thought of head gasket crossed my mind before, but had no coolant lost, white smoke, or overheating.
just misfire & thought that plugs, wires, coils will correct all that.
Anyway, will give you an update as soon as I can get compression check.
thanks, a million, Mark

If it idles OK but shakes and misfires when you open the throttle, my money is on the camshaft lobes worn.
To diagnose cam wear, remove the valve covers and spark plugs.
Rotate the engine by hand, and following the firing order, measure how far the valves are pushed downwards by the pushrods.
If you find one that barely opens when it is supposed to, you have found a cam lobe that has gone flat.
2003 and 2004 engines seem more prone to this than earlier years, for some reason.
You can also simply (yeah, right, SIMPLY) remove the intake and look at the camshaft directly.
Hint- it is very easy to remove the hood from a Discovery, it makes working on the engine much, much easier.
