Default 2018 Range Rover EPB Issue

My wife's 2018 needed rear brake pads. I read the way to put it in Parking Brake Maint mode and attempted to do so. It never gave me the message on the dash, but I tried literally probably 30 times. I changed the pads and after finished, it gave a parking brake needs calibration error, but even if I cleared it, it would come back next time you start the engine. We finally took it to the dealer and now they say it needs 2 calipers, 2 actuators, and 2 brake lines, and almost $4300. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? They blamed it on me not putting it in maintenance mode. It makes no sense at all to me that it cannot simply be reset. How does that make calipers and actuators fail, and brake lines even? This seems beyond ridiculous to me!

I can't decide if it's the vehicles or the dealers who are more ridiculous. Sounds fishy to me. That's why I use an independent who drives a Land Rover himself and thinks LRs are fun to work on.
