3.9 vs 4.0
I'd like to rebuild the engine from my parts truck and use it in the new to me 97 Disco. Since its free and sitting there.
I'm wondering if I can adapt the 3.9 long block in my 89 Range Rover to work with the 4.0 systems and accessories. I have a later model timing cover w the distributor delete. Are the basic foundations the same?
What about doing the 4.6 crank in the 3.9 block? I've read in a couple forums that the 3.9 has a narrower main bearing than the 4.0. True?

you will have trouble with the crank, "i" believe the 4.0 crank is longer than the 3.9 in order to drive the new style oil pump.
also the mains are a different size 2.0 on the 3.9 vs the 4.0 with is 2.185, nothing that line boring the block wouldn't fix, but i don't "think" the block can be clearanced enough to run the throw on the 4.6 crank.
But you could build a killer 4.2 to put in there, i would assume 4.2 cranks and rods can be had cheaply.

I had to sell. There is a thread explaining it in the off topic room.
