i read people like the 299, its a 1500 to 4000 rpm power band so seems perfect for wheeling and medium towing. i am open to other suggestions. also I was considering replacing lifters and rockers, im pretty sure i have a cracked rocker on the right bank

Steeper climbs in low you'll run out of cam (cuz these things are pigs for weight) but for all around it's a good choice. I'm sure you already know your trucks limits.

I don't think so, i have yet to find something that i have asked it to do that it wouldn't so i haven't found them yet. do you know of a cam that would use the full power band? i ask since wheeling i spend most of my time in low between 2500 and 4000.

If it's the 53299 the redline is 4500, max power is at 4750 for both stock engine sizes. Intermittent high rev limit is 5250 or 5000 continuous but your a wee bit past your power band anyways. I think your fine sticking with what you picked due to stroking it, should lower your grunt. You can always do gearing. I read up on the other cams and you'll have to go over budget to use what they offer...... besides they made me laugh. BANG came to my mind on a $800 dollar budget. If it doesn't work out I'll buy it from you, I could use another mpg and the stock cam lobes washout fairly early in life. I'm at 190k+ and it's overdue for a refresh, still wearing the original chain and sprockets.

ive got 1 with 4.0 pistons and 1 with 4.6

the 4.0 piston is quicker, but if I lug it in gear it does ping and thats at near sea level in a prarie that sells 93 octane. That is with the factory gems chip and its 4.0 timing and fuel maps. I see youre in Denver so you have hills, elevation, and 91 octane. you should probably stick with the 4.6 pistons

I don't get what you are saying about Colorado's elevation. high elevation means less detonation then at sea level due to lower atmospheric pressure even with 91 octane. I appreciate your info though. ill be careful not to lug it if i go 4.0 pistons.
