96 disc. misfire 4 ltr.
rpm surges to 1500 rpm at start up. Scanner shows random misfire clndrs. 5&7-4&8. Also shows "enhanced dtc- chck repair manual''. Misfire occurs when reaching crusing speed (some times at lower speeds) Any help would be great. I dont suspect a fuel problem because I can smell raw fuel during misfire. Thanks again, Antiteck.

still misfires. I replaced plugs and wires- cleared codes and same codes came up. It seems to start missing when up to operating temp when reaching crusing speed. Sometimes it runs a bit better when having been shut off and re-started a few times during the day. The codes show random misfire multiple cylndrs-- over rich. Could it be related to an existing ground prob, (temp gauge haywire and other stuff? Thanks again for all your help so far.

180k mi It recently passed a Ca. smog test so I dont suspect a completely tired motor, I have been using cheap gas as i'm sure the motor is somewhat loose. I will try high test next fillup. The truck uses about a qt of oil every 3000-4000 mi., has a good smooth idle, never has a problem at slower speeds- off roading etc. Does the computer tell it to go into an ''economy mode" at cruise speed? It seems thats when the problems start. Thanks

Unplug the VSS, drive the truck for a day, does it still act up?
Yes, plug it back in, thats not the problem.
If not, replace it.
