Default 96 disco loosing power not going above 30mph

hi guys a little help please.
my 96 disco has just started causing me problems,
started a couple of days ago with not going above 30mph or 2500rpm for a few secs then going no problem,
now it will not go above 2500rpm or above 30 mph at all,it looses power at 30mph then drops to around 20mph even if i rev it up it will not go past 2500 rpm, and starts to sputter and pop,
it will idle at 1000 rpm no probs but i can not get it past 2500rpm without it stuttering etc,no codes or lights are on apart from the usual SRS
i am thinking fuel pump or fuel filter ?
am i on the right track ? or any other ideas ?
many thanks in advance

update,12,19,2013
well i thought i would try again, no luck but check engine light came on with code P1316,{missfire excessive emissions fault,
then i took the panel off to get to the fuel pump, made sure all the wires were connected properly, found the main seal to the pump was loose, so i tightened that back up and now it runs again with full power and speed ?
go figure,
now is the code anything to worry about or could it be because it was backfiring ect ?
also i am going to change out the sparks and leads, fuel filter, not sure when it was last done, any suggestions on brands/models that work best with discos ?
many thanks again
UPDATE,
well i changed the fuel pump, and fuel filter, and now she starts no prob runs ok for about 5 mins the the same issue wont do more than 30mph and starts to loose power and starts sputtering ?
any ideas ? i really need my car working asap,??
many thanks

Locate tire valve looking thing on passenger side fuel rail. Should show 32-34 PSI when fuel pump running. Can use a regular tire gauge or something more fancy. Fuel filter under right rear wheel arch and usually quite rusted (time for PB Blaster). Fuel pump needs full voltage, can measure at connector under carpet in the cargo area.
