HI,
Just getting it back on the road after 12 years in storage. Blower fan works and the basic hot/ cold ***** work. All fuses check out good. The A/C "snowflake" does not come on though. An indie LR shop looked at it and told me it's not the A/C button, but a "module" behind the controls. I have taken the dash apart to get back there and I can't find this module. Any ideas where it might be living? Should I replace the A/C switch anyway? Any help would be appreciated!
If the A/C button is INOP (common along with the slider acting up) the A/C will not turn on. When the button is pressed you will hear the 2 aux efans engage as well. There is no module on a D1 for the HVAC as it's all manually controlled via *****. The rest is controlled by relays and the pressure switch on the A/C line.
OK, I'm going to try and hunt down an A/C button. Nothing kicks in when pressed, same for the recycle button next to it. I have to run a few RCA's anyway so it wasn't a total waste pulling dash!
Thanks for the tips
If you have a salvage yard near you the rear A/C Control out of a D2 is very handy. The Rear A/C on/off switch is the same as the A/C switch on the D1. Just swap the caps to have the correct icon. Also the slider is a direct replacement for the D1. It's harder to locate D1 parts, but the D2 rear A/C controls are pretty common and are the exact same thing.
Great idea about the Disco 2 rear control. Just got one for $33 on ebay. The actual BTR6491switch is impossible to find! For some reason the Recycle switch (STC1863) is everywhere.
Yep that's it, just pop the switch out, change the bezel on it, and bingo D1 A/C on/off switch. Then the slider is identical to the D1 as well. I normally always find D2's with rear A/C and I always grab that switch assembly.
OK, got the switch from ebay. Immediately noticed it didn't make clicking sound when pressed (latching), the original does make the sound.
Then I noticed the plug sleeve has different slots than the original.
So I figured what the hell and clipped off the slots so I could plug it in.
It didn't work, BUT I hear a relay or something clicking in the center console up near the transfer case shifter.
Thoughts? original on right original on right
OK, so the A/C does work with donor switch only if I hold it down. It doesn't latch so I'll try to find another one!
My last post didn't go up, so I'll repeat that this switch came out of a D1 rear A/C switch that didn't match the plug pattern. I had to grind off the tabs to get it to connect.

Reason: adding info from a post that didn't go up
switches are repairable quite easily. getting them out of the center console is the hard part.
take the bulbs out
pull apart the two halves of the housing
clean the contacts
pull the orange and green rubber condoms of the bulbs
replace bulbs with 'wheat bulbs'
