The Proline grease from RN is not as badly overpriced as Land Rover's own. AB also has Britpart and All Makes grease tubes for about $10/swivel. It is indeed the same as any CV grease -- a mixture of grease and gear oil. The axle has seals that separate the differential and axle housing from the CV joints. If those seals leak, you'll get gear oil in the CV's anyway -- and that's fine. They used to be like that and Land Rover only changed it because the swivel ball seals would leak the oil out. They found that oil thickened with a lithium grease would not leak as much and they could even cut out chrome-plating the swivel *****. They also did away with the swivel drain plugs.
This question and answer pertain to 1st generations of Range Rover, Defenders, and Discovery.
