'99 D1 does not shift out of 1st gear
Hello everyone.
I am a long time follower and so far I was able to find answers to all my questions without having to create a post, but I guess the time has come
So it first happened a few days ago. I started the truck up to go to work in the morning, let it warm up, started driving and noticed that it has revved up to 3000 RPM, whereas I was not flooring. I let off the gas, accelerated again, still the same, firmly stuck in 1st gear. Stopped, shifted to Park and then to Drive, and that fixed it.
Today it happened again exactly like that, except the shifting to Park worked only on the 3rd try or so..
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this one, because I could not find anything like that in the search.
I'm just afraid that tomorrow I will not be able to shift out of 1st at all

Does shifting manually to other speeds make any difference? Tranny fluid normal level and good color? Tranny fluid changed..ever?
The D1 tranny works on pressure, there has to be enough fluid, in good condition, and warmed up to shift smooth. Lots of valves inside to stick...

I have not tried shifting to other gears, next time it happens I will try.
So it works by pressure, huh? Alright, so at least I know it is not electrical, because that's what my bet was on.
The fluid was changed 10 months ago. I don't know for the filter, as it was the previous owner who did it, I have only had the truck for 7 months.
Fluid is normal in color but seems to be a bit high. It did not cause any problems before though..
I thought about the fluid temperature being a factor too, as the problem has so far occured only in the morning while it is cold.
Would you recommend adding any additive to the tranny fluid?
Would a clogged fluid filter be able to cause something like that?

Adding that will not correct the problem. There ARE NO SOLENOIDS! in a DI transmission! The problem you are having is caused by the governor, either it has debris in it or the 3 Viton rings that seal the governor support are shot. The rings and extension housing gasket can be purchased for about $20 online, but the transfer case has to come out of the truck to replace them and the governor valves and housing must be polished.
The ONLY thing you can safely add to an automatic transmission is ATF or LubeGard fluid conditioner.

Thanks for the input, Higgs.
Yea, sounds expensive, indeed.
Is there any other name that these Viton rings go by? My searches keep coming up with Louis Vuitton-related stuff. Or maybe if you have a specific store that you have in mind, could you point me to it?
