Default 99 discovery sd zero oil pressure

Hi guys, this sight has been very helpful in what to look for when having issues. I just had a used engine put in my 99 sd with 123k miles on it. it is out of another rover that tumbled over down in Moab Utah. The mechanic that did the work is not a Rover specialist but it's in and running. After about 12 minutes the check engine light and oil light come on. The lifters are making noise so i shut it down. Reading threads here as what to check; I first pulled the oil pan down and cleaned the pickup tube and pan. It was clean but there is no gasket or o ring on the pickup tube. Is that normal? I put it back together but no luck. I then changed the oil again to a rotella 15/40 and put a larger filter on. Again, no luck. I put a oil pressure gauge on it and it is reading zero. So, i figured it was time to pull the oil pump which is a chore. When I removed the new oil filter, I noticed it had no oil in it which I found strange. I got the oil pump off and inspected the gears and they look brand new. It must have already been done. However, now I am stumped as to where to go from here. Could it be sucking air some place? Does it need to be primed some how? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You have a broken oil pump so quit trying to let it run.

There needs to be a gasket on the oil pickup or it will suck air. Put two dabs of loctite on the bolts so they don't come off in Moab.
