Advice Needed for Owner of 99 Discovery II
At the risk of sounding cheesy, I am looking for general information/advice. My Discovery II 99 is at 133,000 miles and I am now at the point where $1000 or more a year in repairs/maintenance (NY Pricing
) is the norm and I know there are some expensive preventative repairs that will probably be needed as my steering wheel is starting to have more play, I hear a troublesome click coming from somewhere in my front axle, among other sounds, but have 0/zilch mechanical knowledge beyond very basic fixes.
Question is, are there alternatives to the mechanic? LR clubs where people help each other with repairs, or other groups etc in NY? I am willing to do the work and help others with theirs, but am not aware of anything like this. If not, I guess I'm at the mercy of the mechanic since I don't want to sell!

I work on my own rides, but between the Disco and the SHO (two maintenance ******, I'm definitely doing it wrong) my spare wrench time is super scarce.
Disco Mike has a sticky at the top of the Disco II section outlining some preventive service points to start with. Start there. And download the Rave manual here, it's invaluable in learning how to work on your own LR.

And plan on doing your on work when ever possible, if you ask, we can help/walk you thru what to do.
Lets start with the clicking noise, can you better describe the sound and location? Have you ever rebuilt/replaced your front drive shaft?

I had the U-Joints replaced, among other things over the years, but did not replace the drive shaft. The click/pop happens when I turn the steering wheel to the far left, but not the right. There is another single sound on the left (like something may be loose, but not rattling) when driving over bumps. I suspect I may need to service the CV boot, axle and/or steering damper and/or box adjustment next since I am now experiencing more steering wheel play over bumps. Hopefully it's something simple to fix.
