Belt/Pulley Noise/Chirp
2000 Disco
88k miles
When engine is cold I have a chirp, chirp, chirp for about a min. or two.
Increases with RPM's and chirps parked or moving. I have narrowed it down to pulleys I believe, cause I replaced belt with new and sanded down pulleys. Noise changed a bit but is still there. tensioner seems to be fine. I used metal rod to pinpoint noise with no such luck. Any ideas? Can a perticular oil/grease be injected/sprayed behind pulleys to chance any change in noise?
Thanks for info...

with my belt off, the ACE pump pulley does not turn freely. Are these pulleys servicable without replacing ACE. First post still remains......would a grease or wd-40 be ok to spray behind pulley to locate noise?
First, you screwed up using a spray at or on the belt. Buy a new belt, tensioner pulley and both idler pulleys and you will be fine. As for the ACE pump, there is a lot of pressure on ity and it will not spin freely.
Speaking of your ACE, when did you last service it?

ACE has never been serviced by me. I have owned it for only 1month so far.
is it pretty common for the tensioner pulley to get noisy?....I am having a whine that is think is coming from that too but I really couldnt pinpoint the exact pulley that was doing it
2001 Discovery II
I had the noisy high pitched chirping, especially noticeable when going through drive-thrus, or just sitting and idling. Not incredibly loud, but kind of embarrassing. I was at about 86,000 miles. I replaced the belt tensioner and idler pulleys. Cleared it right up!!

So, take a look at my service list on the top of the Discovery section. This will give you a few things to do and if you get back to me I can walk your thru the Ace service also.
