Default Blew Up Expansion Tank

1995 Land Rover Discovery: There is some sort of cooling system problem. It started to overheat when it was really cold two weeks ago (11 degrees) and the coolant reservoir cracked in half and blew up under the pressure. Started right up without the reservoir, but now runs rough. Pulled the plugs and didn't find any significant fluid or anything.

Any ideas as to the cause of the problem or solutions?

You must not have replaced your coolant bottle with one of the new up-dated white bottles. The black bottles were know to blow there seals.
As for your current problem, you most likely blew your head gasket. Have a coolant pressure test and a chemical block test done to verify.

You may not have enough air space in the tank for the water to expand. I don't know how much you should have but at least half air and half water under pressure.

Air space is not an issue, I run with my bottle filled to with in 1/2" of the cap, he had the typical black bottle seam failure.

Had a similar problem before with my Mr Gasket expansion tank. The culprit was a defective cap. All caps should release pressure if it exceeds a predetermined level. The release valve on the cap should let go before the tank.

We have a 2004 LR Disco II and it is the white coolant reservoir tank. It has started leaking, and runs hot.
I ordered another coolant reservoir tank. How long before this happens again? Any quick fixes recommended until my part comes in???
Can you take out the coolant reservoir tank and run it that way??

Much thanks!

Stop driving it and have someone who knows Rovers pressure test the coolant and if need be do a chemical block test for a possible head gasket leak.
Driving it as it is and you can toast the engine.
