Default Broken hood release cable in a Disco 1

We got this Disco with a vise grip on the hood release cable. When I went to check the oil two days ago the hood release finally broke off at the bracket holding the cable. There is nothing sticking out to grab to release the hood.

Anybody have any ideas to get the hood open?

You can loosen the nut behind the bracket, gain access to the remaining cable casing, get a razor knife and trim the plastic casing, then bend the casing back and fourth, then stretch the casing and clip the stretched casing it will expose the center cable, place some vise grips on the cable and pull open. once that has been done you will need to replace the hood cable assembly. Give it a shot.

That's great. Now you can order a new hood release cable for your D1. It is very easy to install and it makes opening the hood a breeze once replaced.
