Default Bucking

Hey guys. I just bought a '99 Dicovery II & while driving it home from the previous owners it was bucking & the rev gauge was kind of fluxing. When I let off the throttle it acted fine, but when giving it gas a clunk in the rear would happen & it would act like it was changing from drve to 3rd and then back over and over. It is driving me crazy. Any ideas. the fluid in the trans ran out of the fill hole when I checked it this morning. Too much fluid? Had a dark consistancy and smelled burnt

I have a 3 but... clean the throttle body? That's our fix for rough revving, it usually does the trick.

nks. I'll give it a try. Should I use regular carb cleaner on it or a special type?

yeah, even just a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol if you don't have anything else. Just clean out any gunk.

That didn't work. It smoothed the idling a little, but it is randomly shifting down a gear while driving steadily or accelerating. Could this be the transmission's speed sensor?

If your ATF fluid is dark and burnt then you have transmission failure, straight-up with those symptoms. You need to buy a transmission service kit with a filter and o-rings. Drain fluid and drop the pan. Look for metal contaminates on the magnets and the old filter. If you see metal then your clutches or torque converter is failing. If you don't see any metal particles then seal it back up, fill it up with new Dexron fluid and see what happens. If you do have fine particles everywhere, don't waste the time and money putting it back together. Search for another used one. Probably around $400 from a forum member or Ebay
