chuffing and brake problem 1996 v8 disco
Not long ago I bought a 1996 v8 Disco and have experienced a couple of problems I hope someone might be ab le to help before I spend a fortune on repairs .This is my first disco and I love it but these problems are new to me.I have a chuufing noise from the right hand bank which increases with engine speed It sound like a minor exhaust leak, but I cant find one.NO coolant loss or missing, runs fine just has this noise. The other problem a bit more serious. The brakes, every now and then I get a low peddle and vibration through the peddle,It feels like the power assist has failed (brakes not working much at all) then it comes rihgt again.Have had the master cylinder etc checked ,all reported ok no signs of fluid loss ,the abs system has also been checked and came back apparantly all ok.I am at a loss now, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Happy but to scared to drive discovery owner.

I wish I could be more specific other then to say you have an ABS problem if you are getting a weak pedal, sometimes, and the pulsating of the ABS unit.
Have you had any brake warning lights come on? Has a shop actually plugged into your truck with either Rover's test book or an AutoLogic scanner to check all the brake functions?

I have a 96 Discovery made same noise,turns out it's the head gasket,only leaks on compression stroke,having it done now,on #5 cylinder

Head gaskets don't make noise unless you have blown out one complete portion of the head gasket and it would make a terrible noise and you wouldn't be driving it.
Who diagnoised your engine problem?
Mike
I had the head gaskets replaced, piece was blown out of it,but now my ex wife borrowed it to go to Iowa,,now shes stuck in Nebraska with a chuffing sound again,no power loss nor overheating, just annoying loud noise,I'm at a loss being I'm home in Calif
