Coolant pressure test

RE: Coolant pressure test
A coolant pressure test is done to put a little more then normal pressure in the system to help you find a coolant either external or internal. Sometimes a chemical block test will also be done if there are indications of a possible head gasket leak.
Are you leaking coolant?

Hi Mike
I lose like 250 ml every 1000km. My main reason for asking is that I heargurgling sound under the dash very occassionally. Reading some of the previous threads caused me some alarm in terms of maybe a head gasket leak. Must the head come off to do a coolant pressure test?

No, a devise is hooked to the coolant recovery bottle that will do the pressure test.
For the amount you are loosing, I would suggest you get this checked quickly so you don't over heat and damage your engine. Keep filling the coolant bottle to the top every couple mornings so you don't get into trouble.

Also feel the carpet on the passenger side floor for wetness. If it is-- and the residue smells sweet-- you have a leaking heater core. The noise you hear is entrained air in the system, and the air-bubbles rushing through the piping in the lower dash area.
Also-- when they do the coolant system pressure test, they have to do it twice-- once with the engine cold, and once again when it has come up to normal operating pressure (each time the pressure should not drop for at least 30 minutes). The reason for both tests is that the Rover V-8 design can mask a gasket or internal crack -- leak-- dependent on the state ofcontraction or expansion of the alloy materials used.

Yes, there is something wrong, you are loosing coolant and if you wait around too long you will or can over heat the engine, warp a cylinder head, drop a sleeve or crack a block any of which may cost you an engine.
Sounds like you may not be too mechanical, and that is fine, but trust us on this one, have someone check it quickly.
