'diagnostics port' problems

'diagnostics port' problems
Hi everyone. I just stopped by with a couple of quick questions, if I may.
'97 Discovery I
My 'check engine' light is on. I had it scanned and the scanner (or the emissions tester) could not communicate with the disco.
Is it the 'diagnostics port' itself?....can that be fixed?
Is it the ECU not comunicating?
Is there another 'diagnostics-port' ?
