Default Disco 3- steering noise. Can anyone help pls?

Hi everyone
It's my first post on here & hoping someone can help me diagnose the fault with my discovery 3.
I'm getting an awful, loud creaking noise when I turn the steering wheel - even when stationary.
The steering hasn't become heavy and there doesnt seem to be any obvious issue except for the horrible noise.
I took the car to a general garage last week & they couldn't find anything wrong. Except, they found that the break pads needed replacing, which the did.
It was a slight noise when the car went into the garage but the noise is much worse since it's returned from the garage. The noise seems to be getting louder.
Any help much appreciated
Many thanks
Emily x

Does the engine need to be running to make the noise?
If you have the key on and the engine off if you turn the steering wheel from side to side does it still make the noise?
Is it coming from inside the passenger cabin or from under the hood?
If you open the hood and have a friend stand there and listen can they help narrow down where it is coming from?

Hi there
Many thanks for the reply. The noise is coming from under the hood. If you're in the car with the windows shut then you can't hear the noise.
It's making the noise with the key in and engine off.
Cheers for the reply
Emily

Without actually hearing the noise myself, I am leaning towards the rack and pinion or ball joints.

Take it to a different shop and have it checked out.

Try greasing the steering stops first. if not then it needs to be diagnosed.
