Default Disco II blows heat, then blows cold

My Disco 2 displayed high temp a couple days ago,
I checked the coolant (a bit low) and topped it off and burped it. Now when I drive it will throw all kinds of heat for a bit and then stop blowing heat and the temp will rise.
Is this a sign of blown head gasket, the thermostat sticking or something altogether different?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it has enough coolant? You should check the hoses from the heater core to see if they are full after the engine has warmed up. There should always be coolant circulating through the heater core.

At first I heard the waterfall in the dashboard; after burping the waterfall was gone. It throws a ton of heat and maintains a mid-range temp for a maybe 10min of driving and then it blows cool air and begins to overheat (according to the gauge).

Would a faulty thermostat cause these symptoms?

no the stat is not the loss of heater culprit. maybe the overheating problem, but more air in the system is more likely. much advised to get a ultra or scan gauge (something that plugs obdII and gives data). the dash gauge is junk and a waste of space. you could be sucking air from a hole in the system. many possibilities.....hose clamp,, crack in tank, throttle body heater, stripped bleed screw, or even exhaust gas pumped in from a faulty head gasket.

be absolutely positively 100% sure air is all out. follow rave. bleed, bleed, bleed again. you can also pressure test the system. i'd get a test kit to check for exhaust gasses.
