well

you sobered up from your coconut juice and scotch good for you, now tell me how you service a DII drive shaft.
DO you service it just like a DII hub?

Sorry, respectfully I agree with justryan. I think what he is saying is that if the unit was inspected regularly by the dealer - who should be familiar with most of the weak points on a D2 - the driveshaft would have been on the list for checking. It was a dealer after all, if they could make a buck trying to sell you a replacement drive shaft, they would have. Most everything on the car is 16 years old. Where do you stop? You would have to replace most everything. As I said earlier, as soon as you can afford the time and money, replace the drive shaft. The OP is only talking about a thousand miles, after all.....

yes . you sir. have the Boston Wrong mentally ..
I think we've all heard the stories about previous owner lies. I for one don't take much of what they are telling me as truth. I find that someone who wants to make a few thousand bucks will often omit truths at the least.
I don't think taking a day to change all the fluids and check out the driveshaft before a 1000 mile trip on a new to you vehicle is paranoia. If he's driving and something happens like an overheat or faliure..he will have zero options. At least now he can do preventive on his own terms. These are things that should be done anyway so what's the difference? Plus when those shafts let go that's a transmission hole waiting to happen. Seems worth the hassle to check it out.

Except for one thing - the previous owner is GIVING the car to the OP. He has nothing to gain by lying about the service history. I do agree with checking the items in the list, but I felt the question was whether or not to replace the driveshaft before a thousand mile trip. Anyway, this one has been beaten to death, we just agree to disagree, so no more from me on this one.

Thanks Joe and shiftonthefly1 , i'm not being a pain in the a** ..... but what i tell all my customers about Land Rovers ... is that they were built tougher than the average , and built not to be pampered ... the are meant to go where we cant ......long and short ...it can miss a service and still be fine, it can have rust and still be fine , parts don't just break as easy .... why don't people give them the credit they deserve ... i always say it .... they already out lived some humans....and will continue to..

Thank you so much for your input on all of this. I feel much better about taking the truck for the drive. This Disco is coming from my great aunt and uncle - they were service nuts. Literally if the dealer said something needed to be serviced they did it no questions asked. My aunt has told me the name of the specific person that services the truck, and said he will come over to the house to discuss the truck with me directly if I want. I have this strange feeling i am going to crawl under the car and see a new drive shaft...

Anything i might want to ask the person servicing the truck? I know i will be asking

oil type in the car now - syn vs conventional
Cooling system review - detex or gylocal fluid, last flush, hoses/radiator service
drive shaft questions
head gasket question

anything i am missing?

in case anyone is interested the car made it home with no issues other than a vibration at about 3k RPMs, or going about 80mphs. I am going to post about that issue in the Disco 2 area. Thank you all for your help.

Might want to read up and do the major service list I posted on the D2 section to get started.
