Discovery I transmission whine.
I'm in the process of buying a "96 Discovery with 102,000 miles on it. Everything looks great, EXCEPT it has a rather loud whine in 4th and 5th (manual trans !! ) . It is most obvious when accelerating and seems to go away when you let off the gas. Shifting is OK, but 3rd gear syncro is weak. Noise seems to be coming from area below passenger seat. Car has no leaks and some new parts. Runs well otherwise. Front sunroof seems out of alignment, motor works, but then lock up !! Is this an easy fix ??? Also, the radio is on "code".. The code number is written in the Owners manual, but putting it in has no effect. The radio "beeps", and stays indicating "code" . Any help here ??? I'm really looking forward to getting the car, but don't want to spend too much money before I get a chance to drive it !!! I'm trying to make this Discovery as reliable as possible.. Everyone says I "over prepare" my cars.... Any help is GREATLY appreciated !!! Thanks in advance !!!

Hi !
Loud whine in gears when applying power sounds like worn bearings causing gears to mis-align.
What do you mean by motor lock up ?
Radio problem: go see a car radio specialist, I got no answer for this.

By lock up". I can hear and see the sunroof try to move, but then no more movement... I do not keep the control pushed once the motion locks up. It really doesn't move much. I can just see that it is trying to operate.... Thanks for your reply...
Hi !
Something obviously got stuck, possibly by lack of lubrication.
One can try (need 2 people to do this) to assist opening by hand. I it gets open, find where it sticks and repair / lubricate.
Otherwise, one may have to take roof lining out etc to find cause...
