Default Discovery Series II Overheating

I have a 2002 Discovery Series II wich just began rapidly losing coolant. The thermo gauge goes back to nomral after refilling the coolant but I cannot drive more than 5-10 minutes in city before the gauge moves close to red. I have not driven with it on the red and oddly enough I have not found any leaks. Any thoughts on what may be happening?
Thanks

First, stop driving the engine or you will drop a sleeve and loose the engine.
Where do you live, do you have a good mechanic you trust? Fill it up, go to your mechanic and have it pressure tested, plan on leaving it or not driving it till you can then afford to replace the headgaskets, $1400 to $1700.

Mike, who in their right mind would pay (or charge) 1400-1700 to change headgaskets? It is a leisurely 3 hour job. Parts are neglible, two head gaskets, a set of head bolts and two valve cover gaskets...maybe $150-200.

No. You are quite right. We do our own work, or find people who charge a decent wage for great work. Our experiences with the NA Land Rover network has made us gunshy.

I imagine you are one of the those who are justifiably considered prey. Buy yourself a good Manual and save yourself a small fortune with a little of your own time. You will also enjoy it.
