Question Discovery2 growl

I have a disco 2 in great general condition. However it has developed a whiny growl noise when at low revs ie 700 to 1000 revs. as speed and revs increase goes away. but returns when de accelerating or slowing down becoming really noticable at 1000 down to 500 revs. Very obvious inside cab and from underneath car, but when trying to source locate under bonnet - very difficult. Has any body experienced this or any ideas

ASAP check oil level in front and rear differentials, also transfer case (it usually makes a whine) - miles on truck, when (if ever) have you serviced these, original owner? If you need it, RAVE service manual and owner's manual set is free download below. Attached is page on the diff, careful with cheezy plastic plug. Some guys refill with 85W140 weight synthetic to quiet a little more.

What about greasable front prop shaft and rear drive shaft? Not their normal "chirping - ready to impale tranny noise" but you are running out of things that rotate and are cheap.

Does it happen when the transmission is in park or neutral and you rev the engine?
If yes remove the engine belt and start the engine, does it still happen?
No?
Start spinning the pulleys one by one with your hand and see which one makes noise.

Might also be a good time to listen thru a stick held against things like power steering pump, alternator, etc. Stick conducts noise better, blocks out some other noises.

Question Landy growl

Thanks guys for you responses
The noise seems sure to be coming from the engine. The noise appars when stationary as well as moving so I think it cuts out trany diff etc. On idle can't be detected but with initial very slow and gentle accel the revs rise to about 700 and it kicks in but can't be heard when revs rise. Kickd s in again when revs drop to about 1000 and goes at 700 or so. I can rev the engine slowly when standing by the drivers door and hear the noise from inside and outside I am going to try the fan belt thing next remove etc Will keep digging as it is such an annoying noise. apart from that car runs as sweet as a nut and I am getting great mileage - on last trip to auckland - round trip of 690kms plus started with fill up of 65 litres had 3rd of a tank left when I got home - great Cheers flybum

Have assistant hold engine at rpm and "listen" with stick to each belt operated device. May point to one that you want to closely check with belt off. Of course, other end of engine is the flex plate that couples to the tranny....
