I've seen much worse make less noise. Just by looking at the pushrods I can tell they're mushroomed. I forgot to mention to check the push rods for straightness, just roll them, you'll see it. No the rocker assembly bolts are not TTY - 28 ft/lbs.

I think your talking about timing chain slap maybe. Depends on how many miles but usually you'll never hear it with Rovers. Most commonly the exhaust manifold gaskets give out and that can sound like a tick. I also believe the knock sensors are thin frequency, not for all chatter. I think your in for worse case on this. It'll run like nothing's wrong but it sure won't sound like it..... Pinning is a cheapo method of holding the liners in place. Basically taking a set screw, threading drilling, punching a small dimple in the liner and Loctite the set screw in place. It works but no idea for how long.

those have out live there usefulness for sure.
you should also check the fit of the rockers on the shaft, those pockets of black tar like substance leads "me" to believe the rockers are worn and allowing to much oil to sit in the heads.

the first picture is proper oil flow running

the 2nd is with worn rocker arms & shafts runnning.
as you can see the oil is escaping between the rocker and shafts, no restriction = no pressure

Yeah, I also forgot to mention that I had already checked the pushrods for straightness, haha. It was late when I was typing this all out and I forgot to say it lol.

I kinda had a feeling it was rare for anything in the timing cover to make that kind of noise, but figured it was worth asking. I think the last thing I'm going to do is throw my dial indicator on each lifter and spin the crank over to see how much linear movement I'm getting from each to see if the intake lobes have consistent lift and if the exhaust lobes have consistent lift. I almost wonder if it just has a cam that has a toasted lobe or 2. I guess we'll see, after that I'm either putting it back together or pulling the entire motor out, haven't decided which I feel like doing yet hahahaha.

Awesome, thanks for adding those pictures! I'll tear mine all apart to see what the clearances are like, but I'm sure it'll probably be like everything else already is, worn out, lol.

Hey before I forget about it again, does anyone make a hydraulic roller cam for these things and a set of hydraulic roller lifters with link bars? I'm just thinking if I'm going to go ahead and rebuild the entire thing I have no desire to run another flat tappet cam. Just feels like adding wooden wheels to a space shuttle. Lol.

sorry no roller cam that I know about, you can do roller rockers for like $800. but it kind of defeats the purpose when the rest of the design is 50 years old

Old thread - https://landroverforums.com/forum/en...rockers-54991/

Roller cam - Triumph TR8/ Rover V8 Roller Camshaft Obviously this cam has a dizzy gear...... they make em for the 4.0L and 4.6L as well.

What you'll run up against with upping the performance is the ECM. It can handle performance but stocker won't be as efficient or tunable. You'll have to go with MegaSquirt - or already made MSPro 3 box is ideal even if it is $1500....... and add a harness to it.

Hey so I think I might have found something now that I can see a little better in the block. Last I checked, aren't the lifters supposed to ride at least decently close to the center of the cam lobes? Lol. Because from what I can see now it looks like the cam has walked forward about a 1/4 inch because all of the lifters have their rear ends hanging off in mid air.

If I have to start messing with ecm stuff then it's a no go, still has to pass emissions out here. The only reason I wanted to do a roller setup is so that in 60k miles I didn't have to wonder if the cam is on its last leg yet or not, lol. I was thinking stock duration, lift, and everything that would allow me to mimic the flat tappet cam but have the durability of a roller, then just compensate for whatever difference in lifter height with different pushrods. Maybe I can just call Comp and get them to custom grind me one for it, I did this with my vette when I was building that a couple years ago.

Thank you for those links, I'm curious to see what others have done.
