LR entusiests in Colorado Springs area, perhaps there is someone that has done HG and Front Cover and would not mind giving me some help... I am very nervous about embarking on this repair I was planning on doing this in early January... any assistance / advice appreciated.

I have read / researched as much as I can. Also reading the RAVE manual, but reading and doing are totally different...

nothing to be scared of. start tearing it down and take pictures for reference if you think you might need to. ancillaries can be moved to the side for the most part. get down to the head bolts, torque them off the opposite of the way they are torqued down. (outside to center for removal) the biggest pita is cleaning everything up, once it is removed.

 

I know that I am being a lot nervous... this is my baby But it has to be done.... just getting that first step going is tough. Another question - are there any special tools that I might need? Pulling the front cover off and the timing chain gears... so I am hoping it isn't gong to be rough going.

One thing I recommend is putting the bolts back into the part you just took off. Put matching nuts and bolts together. You can even lay out the parts in order you removed them on a nice big spot like a large bench or even a clean floor on the other side of the garage. This will make your life way easier on reassembly.

 

- 1/4 drive 8mm 12 point socket for valve covers.

- Largest 1/2" drive socket wrench you can buy for removing head bolts.

- Largest 1/2" drive torque wrench you can buy for torquing the head bolts.

- Lots of brake parts cleaner

 

1/4" drive 8mm 12 point socket for valve covers.
1/2 drive shallow 5/8" 6 point impact socket
6" 1/2 drive extension
24" 1/2 drive breaker bar.

AND un-torqure the heads when removing them, remove the head bolts from the outside and work into the center of the head.

 

I just wanted to follow up on this thread... I have ordered all the parts and was ready to do the HG and the ABS Opt B. I started the ABS job and that went well... however the next morning when I went to drive the truck, code P0307 / P0300 started (ugh). I was under the impression that it was going to be associated with the HG, however in my mind it is always wise to start a project / maintenance with a known good.

So I started to trouble shoot the P0307... new wires and plugs. Still there, so I had the local Rover shop look it over to confirm what I thought. Guess what - it was the coil pack But he quoted me 1000.00 to do the HG job and front cover, so I have surrendered to the fact that I won't have the time to do this job and I think a 1000.00 is not too bad.

Good news... my Land Rover should be back on the road this Thursday (8 Jan '14) !! Really happy about that.

But he quoted me 1000.00 to do the HG job and front cover

for that price i would have had him do it too, i had the same problems and was quoted $3334.00 for head gasket and front cover that was 3-years ago.

 

So, it has taken the shop a little longer than expected... but this is where they are at... at this point it is looking good. I am happy with the work being done this far and REALLY excited to get the Disco back Monday .
