Default FUEL PUMP

2000 DISCOVERY WON'T START. DON'T HEAR FUEL PUMP PRIMING. I RAN CLOSE TO EMPTY, FEEL THIS MIGHT HAVE DAMAGED FUEL PUMP. WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE NOWS HOW TO REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP. ICANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE THE METAL RING AROUND THE TOP OF THE PUMP THAT APPARENTLY HOLDS IT IN PLACE WITH THE FUEL TANK.ANYONE DONE THIS BEFORE? DOES IT SCREW OFF? I DON'T WANT TO DAMAGE IT. ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A INEXPENSIVE PUMP?
tHANKS ED.

Please do not post in all caps. You will convey your point just as well in lowercase I promise.

First, have you checked the fuses and relays to ensure the fuel pump is getting power. Have you done a fuel pressure test?

Well are you dead set on replacing the pump? I'm assuming you already have the tank dropped, but have yet to remove the pump. It is possible you do not have a burnt out pump. I have run dry a few times and my fuel pump is still kickin and maintaining pressure. Have you done any other diagnostics?

Ijust figured it was a bad pump since I don't hear it. Am I jumping the gun by replacing it? No I have not dropped the tank. Just took a peek from the cargo bed. No have not done any other diagnostics.I ran dry, filled it up and within the day itwouldn't start.

I'm pretty sure there is a priming sequence after you run dry to put the vehicle back into normal operation instead of the fault condition. I'll see if I can find it for ya, but you should check your owners manual in the mean time.

Lets get back to basics, how many miles on the truck, how often do you run it under 1/4 tank or have the fuel light come on, what about your check engine light is it on???????????
Don't drop the tank, go the the access port in the midle of the cargo floor to get to the fuel pump.
Don't take out the old pump unless you have a replacement cause too many times, some one will remove the pump to check it and break something, and with out a new pump you are dead.
As for the ring, yes it twists to release the pump.
Have you considered the crank sensor? If it has failed, you will not have fuel or spark, do you now still have spark?

I have 73,000 miles on the truck. Cars has always been serviced by LR and has been very reliable. The engine light have not been on. lately I have been letting run till fuel light pops up. I have already gone to the access port and have access to the pump. My concern was how to remove the ring. Have not considerd crank sensor. How should I check? I will check back to forum later. As for priming sequence could not find one in manual or on the net. Thanks for the help.

Hi DISCOLIVES.
Have you pulled the plug on the pump and checked for 12V supply?Use a Testlight or Voltmeter on the thick white and purple wire. There should be 12V for a few seconds with the ignition turned on.If there is nothing, the problem lays elsewhere.I normally use a blunt chissel and a hammer on the little bumps on top of the ring.It loosens anticlockwise.
Regards
Marius

Who ever told you to drive it till the fuel light came on should be buying you a new pump. That is the quickest way to run up a pump.
Don't even waist time trying to figure out what is wrong, go buy a new pump and always stay above 1/4 tank.
