Default Gas Gauge faulty?

When i fill up my gas tank it only goes to a little less then 3/4 full. The get gas light comes on and i fill the tank and it takes about 16 or 17 gallons of gas to fill. How many gallons are actually in it? How do i fix this problem so the gauge reads correctly?

What does your owner's manual state about capacity??
Your gauge is fine, your sender is failing.
