Default Help me with my fiances beetle TEMP COLD

I need help with this. Its a repost from another forum.

My fiances beetle that I bought her has not given us any problem in 3 years and 40k.

Now that its cold she has been having heat problems.

I first replaced the thermostat thinking it was stuck open. I seemed to help the heat a little and my scan gauge showed the temp a little low but decent.

I then got a low coolant temperature code and replaced the little green sensor everyone says to. But no difference and code is still occuring.

I understand the pump deal. But the temperature isn't getting up there. Obviously its pumping..

Sorry for the guess about the water pump being electric. I just figured and I heard something running after I shut off the vehicle I figured it was it.

Anyways I just hooked up my gauge and took the car for a ride.

I started it and let it idle for 10mins it got up to 160*

I took it out of the neighborhood and it got up to 180* I then took it for a drive and was thinking it was working fine the whole time and how my girlfriend must be doing something wrong.

Then the temperature started dropping.. In about 8 miles of driving it dropped to 145* and then when it got home I left it idle and it stayed there..

It was doing this so I though OBVIOUSLY its the thermostat. I changed it and figured it was good to go. The issue is obviously not the thermostat. The timing advance when going 60 is 24 whatever that means and the o2 sensors are running in closed loop.

Why the heck does the hose from the thermostat go to the bottom of the radiator is this not *** backwads?

ANY HELP?

also code p0116 OBVIOUSLY

OK, Just like posting about your Rover problems on this forum, we need details like year, and engine size (if more than one is offered that year)

I actually have access to a few troubleshooting resources through work (on the net so I can access from home).

Edit: Assuming it is a 2006 or 2007, it is a 2.5L (if it's not diesel) but let me know if it is the BPR or BPS engine. If it is a 2005, it's either a 2.0L BEV or BGD or 1.8L or 1.9L diesel.

It is a 1.8t

I figured it's like any engine so it didn't really matter as I can't find any related topics it dissent seem to be common.

All I can think
Of is two bad thermostats or it's running rich? But no black smoke or codes other than it saying it's cold.

2005 1.8L TD BKF engine? And you have already upgraded to the green colored CTS?

Any other symptoms other than not getting to temperature?

The O2's are running closed loop because the engine is running to cold, closed loop basically means full choke.
I have never heard of any car with a electric water pump.
If it is in fact running to cold and the coolant level is full it must be the t-stat.

Spike, I think you have your "loops" crossed Until a certain temperature is reached, they're going to be in open loop, then switch to closed loop.

Spence, how did the wiring terminals look on the CTS/ECT pigtail? I have heard that corrosion can also cause this code and problem.

Quite welcome. I read it twice and didn't catch it until I had my RDA 4 cups of coffee!
