Holy cow what happened?
So, driving down the road this afternoon, stopped at a stop sign and hear this aweful grinding noise and smell something burning. The starter was stuck engaged. Turned off the key but it kept running. Finally got the starter to disengage but truck would not start back. Dead, no click nothing...plenty of battery and all lights work but now when you turn on the key the wipers run when off, blinkers flashing, etc...something in the wiring going to ground or what? Tow bill back home and in the garage. 1999 discovery 1. Suggestions before I roll her off the bank into the woods?

time for reworked starter. Hopefully no bends to teeth of reluctor plate (triggers the CKP sensor). Sensor should be looked at so see if metal fuzz built up on tip or bent tip. Starter comes off with several extensions working from in front of the axle. Clean out allen head screws so you can get tool all the way to the bottom.
Some folks have success going down between the manifold pipes and back with sum universal socket joints, others seem to be able to get right up on it at near the firewall. I guess it depends on your back and arm/hand size. Also, if you have the heat shield over the starter, the bolt to remove it #5 below is in a bracket out front on the motor housing on the front left. Very shallow bolt head, so take it easy. Then the heat shield has a big flexible/spring steel C shape clamp that holds it to the starter. Pull up on it and it will slip off, bascilly, well maybe not slip. You have to do a little bending and shaping to get the heat shield out, but it is flexible and has the 90 degree bend on the front where it bolts to that front mount point. I wanted to put mine back on, but gave up on it. Most guys run without it.

New starter installed and back in business. Hot wire coming out of starter to solenoid was burnt completely out. Ground wire was loose on starter. Still have an intermittent miss that I cannot find. New MAF, plugs, wires, fuel filter. No change. Still getting random misfire. Driving around at 50 mph and it will start missing and losing speed with no change in rpm. Floor it and it comes back on light a light switch. Weird.
