Default Little "noise" after H-gasket failure???

Hi all, first post here, hoping to get some timely feedback in time to buy this rig or not. It's a 2002 Disovery II with 116K miles, but only low miles on a new engine, which happened when it blew a head gasket earlier in it's life, original owner opted to go for new engine instead of a HG fix. So, it happened again obviously and the owner has "had it". Car is VERY nice, full maint. records, not a drop of oil under the car... all elect works, nice car. I can buy it for 1K with brand new tires ... but, it's been sitting for two mo, and when I started it up I can hear the slightest tick/knock on acceleration, right when it comes up off of idle... again it's on the UPSWING of rpms, can't hear it at idle. Apparently they did the right thing when it happened again, had it towed, supposedly not "too" hot... etc. Question I guess is, given the circumstances is there any way this could be a noise which is not a big deal? Something to do with water in the combustion chamber, valves or lifter noise? It appears to be coming from the upper part of the engine but I can't be sure. Well, any thoughts greatly appreciated, I'd like to seal the deal on this thing in the AM but the noise gave me pause for sure. Thanks!

Could it just be exhaust gas escaping the hg, that you are hearing? Stethoscope would be useful. 1k = pretty decent deal IMO .

Thank you Dusty 1. Yeah I did some searching and tho not exactly common it seems that bad hg can make some "knocking" sounds, especially if gasses are getting swapped between cylinders? Anyway I own it lol. Figure that the motor has such low miles, the PO swore that they didn't get it red hot, I'll get lucky. If not, heck I'll just fix that too. I was wrong tho, it's a 99, not a 2002.

Guess you need a GMC style blower then... btw wondering what people think of this the "slipped sleeve" issue? At least one person has confirmed a .25 inch slipped sleeve in his motor... gee hope not (man, you gotta be kidding me!)

They do slip. Top hat liners and pinning liners seem to be the solution. Good info on both.

get a co2 test kit from the local auto parts store, test the coolant and see if it is contaminated.

Thanks for the suggestion on the co2 kit, I weren't aware of them. But, have to say I'm not sure what I'd gain from that? I do know that it's leaking coolant from the right side, after listening again to the "noise" a bit more (did drive it to repair spot today) it seems pretty clear it's an exhaust leak of some sort, no coolant in the oil. Really this should be simple (famous last words)... plan on taking it apart tomorrow

wayull, just maybe I should have not brushed off drowssap's suggestion of a co2 sniffer (ya think?), cuz the nipple on the expansion tank is cracked and probably the source of all the coolant leakage. NOW I have the heads ready to pop off and unless I'm wrong (will search) the only way to test for co2 is with the engine running? Could it be that it has an exhaust leak and a broken nipple and that's all? I suppose even if that's true, since it's been hot would be prudent to change them now... anyway its a bit late for second guessing as there's just a few bolts holding them on
