Angry Loss of Drive 1998 Diesel Discovery

Greetings.

Just wondering if someone may be able to point me to a possible cause for my dilemma.

I was driving on the freeway last night at about 100Km/hr. I took my foot off the accelerator and when i put it back on again there was no power going to the drive. The engine is working fine, The clutch pedal has pressure and the gear lever feels as if it is going through the gears but no power is being transferred to the wheels.

There was no noise, in fact there was no difference that i could detect in the car except that the engine appeared to be no longer attached to the wheels.

The clutch is relatively new.

I've tried locking the diff and no difference.

The car is sitting in the driveway after being dropped off by a tow truck.

I'm just wondering if it is something that is worth even attempting to fix or is it the end of the road for the beast. Given that getting a mechanic to replace the windscreen wipers costs more than the car is currently worth.

Any suggestions.

Peter

Sounds like you may have a sheared gearbox output shaft. I guess that would be worst case. Can you roll the disco with the engine off and the gearbox in gear?

Thanks for your response.

Yes The car can roll with the gear lever in what appears to be gear any gear.

There was absolutely no noise that i could hear when this happened which i'd have thought if something like that sheared. However its a land drover and nothing would surprise me.

It just seems that it is permanently in neutral irrespective of what gear the gear lever is in.

Definitely sounds like a sheared mainshaft, though it's possible it's something else. Even so, I'd say it's 99.9% surely a gearbox problem.
