LSD
Hi guys, I'm new here and so far I can tell I'll be a regular. I live in North QLD, Australia. I drive a 1998 Disco TDi with a few off-roadmods, but otherwise stock mechanically. My question is about the rear diff: I have always thought the rear diff is limited-slip, while the front is open-wheel. This is what I was told by a TJM fellow who (apparently) knew his Land Rovers. I was shopping around for an LSD centre for the front, to make a bit more capable off-road, and a guy selling one told me no Disco's have been made with LSD's, the closest thing would be late models with lockable rears. He also said the front and rear diff's are identical - is this bull?
So I'm confused. I could have ennded upupgrading the wrong end! Can anyone tell me for certain? Is my Disco limited-slip rear and open-wheel front, or open wheel front AND rear??
Can I install LSD to the front end?
The thing is, in my experience, I would have thought it LSD because it has gone everywhere I pointed it. Just two days ago (Sunday), I went to a local hard-core 4WD track with my brother-in-law who drives a 1990 Landcruiser trayback, which is open-wheel front and rear.No word of a lie, twice he could not continue and had to back out or be winched out, while the Landy poked on through (not without some scrabbling). Maybe it was luck, but twice in an afternoon is genuine bragging rights.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure what the LSD is, but I can tell you for a fact that your rear diff, as the front is, is an open diff.
Here in the states when we want to add a locking diff to a Rover we use either an ARB, a Detroit locker or a True Trac.
Hope this helps.

Sorry: Limited-Slip Diff. Over here we just call itan LSD.
So you're telling me my Landy has open diffs front and back? Not alimited-slip rear diff?
I suppose I'm a bit dissappointed because I've assumed it had a LSD rear for years, and when the TJM fellow told me as much I never questioned it until I wastold otherwise. It's standard fitment on just about every 4WD ute or 'SUV' over here, I can't understand why it doesn't have one. She's a great rig, but if I'm going to go further (we seem to be going further and harder every time) I'll need to install one in the rear before I do anything else.
The TrueTrac appeals to me, I'm not interested in a manually-operated full-locking diff, andfrom what I can tell it behaves more like a LSD than a locker or auto-locker, and I would assume it puts far less strain on the driveline. But to tell the truth I don't really know. Any help would go a long way right now!
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Or is there a simple LSD centre I can get to fit my Landy?
Thanks again.

This will give you some good information.
Let us know what you do.
Just so you know, I run a rear Detroit locker and a front True Trac and they are great together, I also have lots of friends that run 2 True Tracs with great success off the road.

Thanks Mike, that did help.
I've rang around but no-one's heard of the TrueTrac diff, but there is someone at TJMgetting prices for me. If it's in line with US prices, I should expect to pay between AU$550 - $700, which might slip by the misses unknown for awhile. The TrueTrac seems the right way to go for me, perhaps one at the front at a later stage.
You've got twin locking diffs? Your Disco must boogie!
