Red face M & S nightmare

any help much appreciated. I have a 99 V8 disco which is driving me crazy. Most times when going out when the vehicle is cold I only travel about 3 or 4 klms. when the M & S lights flash and the engine shuts down. I wait for approx. 10 minutes and it will start again. It will then go fo another 1/2 klm.and does it all over again. It will do this 3 or 4 times and then it will run perfectly for the rest of the day, until it is left for a few hours to cool down then the same senariom starts all over again. I was advised that the inhibitor switch causes this so I purchased a new one and fitted it. This made absolutely no difference. Other than this problem the disco is fantastic. Ps. It cant be a fuel problem as it does it whether it is running on petrol or LPG.

is your check engine light on? When was the last time you serviced the Transmission? how about the transfer case?

Go get your charging system checked, voltage has to be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts, yours may be too low.

have you actually had the codes read or not. Lets just start with the codes being read and being diagnosed instead of throwing parts at the problem.

I can understand this greatly. My 99 disco recently has been m and s ing me as well. I can drive but the vehicle will not get out of 1st gear. Turn car on off on off on off and lights and symptoms vanish. Any response most appreciated, David

I went for a 40 klm. round trip this morning. I put the tranny in sports mode and it went without missing a beat until half way back I took it out of sports mode and back into normal. 200 meters later M & S flashed up and she stopped. Locked and unlocked 3 times, placed into sports mode again, started straight away and drove home without fault. I did not notice that the performance had slipped a bit, until the battery was flat one morning a few months back. I discovered that the alternator was not working so I had it reconditioned and when next driven, I really noticed the difference in performance. The part I did replace. the inhibitor switch, was RS and needed to be replaced anyway, the sealing boot around the wires where they enter the switch was completely missing allowing moisture to run straight into it. Regards Kev.

did another 40 klm. trip today. turns out running in sports mode was a false sense of security as started doing the m & S thing again. Kev

did you get the voltage checked? if the voltage checks out OK then I would say check for corrosion in the fuse box and check the wiring of the Crank Position Sensor.
