Default mixing old and new tires

1994 discovery. Went to buy 2 new tires and was asked by the tire salesman if it was a good idea to replace only 2. He stated the Subaru didn't like mixing old and new tires. Since this is my first all the time 4 wheel drive I need to know. Can I replace just 2 tires as long as they are the same size as the old ones ? Thanks for the info.

On a D1 you should be fine. All of the differentials are open.

Agreed as long as they are the same size and not like 29's on one axle and 32s on the other

Which makes me wonder. I'm getting ready to put new wheels on my LR3 and two of the tires need to be replaced. Should I be looking at a full set? I know on the AWD Volvo's they only recommend replacing 4 tires at a time.
