Default New member! Need some expert advice

Hi...I own a Disco II 99, V8 with 89000miles. Rectently it quit going into reverse and would occasionally slip while starting from a stop in drive. We took it in and they drained the transmission fluid, which looked like diesel fuel and smell worse, and put some new fluid in. They told me my tran is shot and need a new one. Since then, it still will not reverse, but we have had no slipping problems in drive. Do I really need an entire new transmission or is there a part of the transmission that needs fixing? Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much

What sort of maintance has your tranny had so far? At your mileage you should have had 3 tranny services did yo?
The onlu chance you might have would be to put some good additive, like Lucas or B&G tranny additive and see if it will free up the valve of solenoid that is causing you the problem.
If it doesn't work, then yes, you will be needing a new tranny or reman.

I was hoping that you would reply DisoMike...you seem to be the man around here!! I know that it was regularly serviced up until 50k, as I have the paper work, but the second owner put in a u trans in in Dec 05. We have only had it 7 months. I do infact have a bottle of that trans additive sitting right here, but how would I go about putting it in? My user manual is very vague on the transmission. I do know that it is on the left side in the back and that there is a plug...and the bottle is a squeeze type bottle. Any info would be greatly appreciated...I know that if I asked the service station to do it, they would flay out decline. Thanks so much!!!!

Best thing you can do would be to first drain off an equal amount to the additive from the tranny pan, then replace what you drained off by maybe puttin a small hose on the bottle and squeezing it into the tranny when the engine is running. To make sure the tranny is full keep filling it till the fluid starts to run out the fill hole while the engine is running.

Thanks...you are great. I will let you know how it turns out!! Wish me luck...the repair guy told me that what was coming out was like "mud" ( that was his description today) and that there is no way that there is anything left...it has to be all burned up in there. I just don't understand why Reverse is the only one that does not work??? Thanks
