Interesting situation Im in. Midway through the 6 hour trip home this Thanksgiving weekend, my 85 Defender 110 300tdi seemed to have lost all boost pressure from the turbo. The whine coming from the turbo intensified, and a noticible, new, sound emerged. The new sound seems to be coming from the engine bay near the turbo. From the drivers seat, it really sounds like the heater is on full blast on the left side of the cabin. In 4th and 5th gear, there is no real power while trying to get up to highway speed like there once was. The truck was not fast before by any means, but this is rediculous. Any idea what might be the issue? Blown seal in the turbo? Thanks in advance.

 

You have a leak in the air intake, so start at the turbo and follow all of the intake tubing back towards the intercooler.
If you are lucky it is just a loose/broken clamp.
If you are not so lucky you have a hole in the intercooler.
When I drove truck the intake tube fell off from the intercooler to the engine intake, the clamp fell off.
I fixed it with my boot lace, it got me the last 75 miles home.

 

Excellent diagnosis. At first I was doubtful, because I had already checked all the piping for leaks. After further inspection, with a better light source, I found the hole blown in the hose off the turbo leading to the intercooler. It was tucked down under where I could barely find it.
