o4 Freelander heater smells like coolant

The coolant can be leaking from the heater core. You can remove core from system by taking off hoses at point #3 in attached page from shop manual, and splicing them together with a hose repair double male b a r b connector. This will allow you to drive, while deciding on next path. The shop manual (part of the RAVE) shows how to change a heater matrix, usually it is considered that the rest of the truck is built around this.
Some would run some leakz stopz (cooling system sealer) and hope for the best, however, I will point out that leak stop may also gum up the radiator and other parts of the cooling system and make things overheat. If you use stopz leakz products in a radiator with crud inside it, that will be sealed off and now you have half a radiator.
Of course, while you are at it look at potential leaks from the other hose clamps under the hood. Every one of them, more that a garage full of Discos.....
