Default oil coolant pipe attachment

I have a 2000 discovery. I am trying to get the oil coolant pipe back on after replacing timing cover. It is about 3/4 inch forward of the hole and I am having a hard time pushing it back far enough to get it in. Is this normal. Just don't want to break anything getting it back on.
