Default overheating PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello,
I have a 1996 range rover 4.0, and at times it overheats. I shut the engine off and turn it right back on and it's fine. It doesn't do it all the time, but I would like to fix what ever is wrong with it. If anyone might know what would cause this, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Justin

I wouldn't drive it any more till you have it checked by a mechanic. If it is head gaskets, you could over heat the engine, drop a sleeve and loose the engine.
Need to have someone do a pressure test on the coolant system to find the leak.

Is it leaking..are you loosing coolant? if you are and there is none on the garage floor, then it could be going through the engine, or leaking out the heater core, which would be noticible in the wet carpets.Do you notice a gurgling sound behind the dash? if any of these sounds familiar, then there is coolant loss, if you cant find the leak, check the plugs. a very white ceramic plug looking nearly new will indicate a pressure washed plug due to leaking in the cylinder, which in my case was a head gasket failure but could be worse a sleeve which has dropped. If none of these are true, then check basics such as thermostat and or fan clutch, or electric fans if you have them for proper operation. good luck.

I am not losing any coolant, but the other day it overheated, and the return line where it goes back into the radiator popped off and spilled coolant every where. I looked at it, and the lip on the radiator where the hose slides on had deteriorated and broke off. I put it back on, and since then no leaks.
When I turn the A/C on, or even just the fan, it overheats. Any thoughts?

You need to get that into a shop and have them find the cause of the over heat before you drop a sleeve.

If you are overheating and then you turn it off and back on and it's fine it sounds like your thermostat is sticking. I had the same problem last week and a new thermostat cured my problems.

I already replaced that. It was my first thought also. It hasn't overheated in a week now.
