Default Rear shocks broke off

I have a 97' Discovery. Both shocks broke off yesterday and are hanging but we tied with cables (to keep them from popping the tires). My question is, how bad is it to be driving on the springs? I'm assuming it's not the best idea but I need it to get to and from work. How much would a lift typically cost AND what size lift would you reccomend? Or would just be better off replacing the 2 shocks? I really don't plan on beating this thing to **** and going off roading. Just want to use it as my daily driver and to go hiking and kayaking. Bought this thing about 3 months ago and replaced ALOT on it already.

If you don't need the lift just replace the shocks and move on. A pair of shocks won't set you back much.
