Default shift assembly

I have been having the common problem of getting stuck in park with my 03 disco. I searched this forum and decided that the brake light switch needed to be replaced. I took it in to have this done and was told that the shift assembly needed to be replaced for $622. The technician says that the brake light switch is starting to fail but that even when engaged there is no power going to the solenoid. Does this sound like a reasonable explanation? I'm inclined to just replace the brake light switch and see if that works.
Please help.

You need to post tech questions that you want replys on, in the Discovery Section where they will be seen.
You also need a second option only after you buy a new brake switch and install it, $25 in parts and 5 minutes of your time, this shop saw you coming?
