Stuck CD Changer, No Magazine message, FIXED
My CD changer went from jamming up every other time to instantly working reliably 100% of the time. Here is my fix:
Move the seat all the way forward and up. Working from behind and underneath the seat disconnect the wiring harness going to the changer and use needle nose pliers to pinch the harness anchor tip where it goes through the left changer bracket to remove the anchor.
Working from under the rear of the seat, use a 10mm 1/4" drive socket and ratchet and extensions to remove the 4 nuts holding the changer in. If you do not have the proper extensions then disconnect the negative terminal on the battery (so you do not set off the SRS/airbag light), Disconnect the two seat connectors under the seat, then take out the 4 torx drive bolts that hold the seat then take the seat out. Taking the seat out might be the better way to go especially if you have air tools.
Take the changer to the bench and remove the 2 mounting brackets and 3 small screws from each side. I un-clipped the square plastic attitude holders on each side. You may not have to do that.
This next part is the hardest; To remove the top cover, carefully pry the sides out and pry the back up and away a bit at a time. At some point you are going to have to be brave and pry the plastic front cover away from the steel case. There are 4 tabs top and bottom holding it in place. Prying away will make them pop out of their holes.
Once the top cover is off you can take the changer back to the Disco and plug it into the harness and lay in the right rear foot well. Put the magazine in if it was taken out. If the magazine is stuck in place then proceed to the next paragraph to get it going.
I noticed that when the changer is plugged in it will cycle through all 6 sleeves, pausing for a second between sleeves, to record the CD info. On my changer it was frozen solid and not moving. If I pushed the large circular gear wheel it would start running again. After the sleeve cycle I would eject the magazine then load it right back in to initialize and it would check the sleeve content all over again. Every other loading of the magazine it would freeze up and I would have to bump the large circular gear to get it going again.
I put small spritzes of Tri-Flow lubricant/penetrant on everything that moves, trying not to make a big mess. I also put a few drops of Deoxit 5 on the miniature switches that the tiny plastic arm swings back and forth against. Once I lubed the mechanism it never stuck again. I loaded and unloaded the magazine many, many times with and without CDs including playing some CDs just to make sure it was going to continue working.
I then dabbed up as much of the mess that I could, took the changer back to the bench and reassembled the whole thing. Before putting the lid back on I put a small spot of white Lithium grease on the large black plastic gear where it looked like there was previously some dried up white grease where it would wipe around and do some good.
It is a bit tricky getting the top and front covers back on and screwed together. Tightening the 4 nuts that hold it under the seat can be finicky if you did not take the seat out.
I have run the CD player a fair amount and it has gone from totally jamming every other time I put it in to being 100% reliable. We will see how long it lasts. :O)
