Default Suspected Fuel pump issue

I’m new to the site so go easy. I have recently bought a 2010 Range Rover sport 3.0D. The car won’t start, no fault codes, the car fires up off the easy start no problem. All the in-tank mods have been carried out to a decent standard. The pump works on the bench (tested it by putting a current thought it). the pump also works when I put it back in the tank a put a current through the plug on the top of the tank so no issues there. The problem is, there is power to the pump when the ignition is on but I can’t seem to get a ground reading. Can I test this is the issue by putting a temporary earth to the body of the car and then seeing if she fires up? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance
