I'm having my driver's side seat repaired (thread coming apart after 15 years). Given the lack of wear on the passenger's side seat, is it possible to remove both, repair the one and switch them? It'd be like having a brand new seat cover where I need it most.

Just source a good used one from the dismantlers. Way to much trouble to swap them if you don't have to. Left and right are close enough they will work fine either side. Leather/heated.... don't know if the cloth is the same.

Can you tell me who the "dismantlers" are? Aside from any standard salvage yard?

I have been hoarding a few cloth seat bottom covers in Beige for a D1(96 or newer). If that is what you need, let me know. I have a D1 with beige cloth and looked for years for replacements, and finally found a few.
