Timing cover gasket repair gone bad

All -
I attempted my first major repair this week. The gasket of the timing cover was leaking. Local mechanic wanted $1200 so I decided to tackle this beast on my own. I thought the repair went well but upon first cranking, I have found that there is oil leaking from around the timing cover seal (crank shaft seal). I put a new seal in and everything seemed to go back together well. What could have gone wrong?
Is the new seal supposed to be flush with the outside of the cover or be pushed in until it stops (slightly recessed)?
Any ideas?
I also found a small leak in the top of the radiator that seems to be a pinhole in the plastic and there is also antifreeze leaking from the shroud screw hole. I guess this means radiator replacement too.
Thanks.
