Default Timing cover replacement

I have gotten into our first disco 2. 04 disco with 4.6. It has a massive oil leak from the front cover. Getting set up to remove and replace. What is the most straightforward way to align this when refitting? The manual calls for LRT-12-090. Truly necessary? The videos I've seen the person just slide fits the cover back on. I certainly am skeptical of videos however.

Look in the D2 forum. Lots of info on there on the front cover installation.
